Bon Ton Resort in Langkawi
Catering to a different class of guests, this world class resort has been the brain child of Australian Narelle McMurtrie who has put together 8 traditional Malay Kampung homes which were converted to very unique hotel rooms or villas making this place one of the most unique villas in the world.
Bon Ton Resort in Langkawi
Bon Ton Resort is also strategically located along the famous Pantai Cenang Beach and is only a 10 minute drive from the Langkawi Airport and 5 minutes to the main beach.
The plot of land where the resort sits on is an old coconut plantation with a marsh land therefore privacy is guaranteed here. However, you must now that there is absolutely no beach at this resort.
At the rersort, a beautiful swimming is pool built on the lush green turf with deck chairs surrounding it complete with a little bar. A wooden platform sits at the edge where a lotus pond separates the marsh from the resort.
The Bon Ton Resort also has a restaurant called Nam Restaurant which is an open air concept serving a fusion of East and West with Asian spices and is very popular with the travelers.
Many who come here just for the dining experience are usually from other resorts and hotels around Langkawi. If you love authentic Nyonya dishes, the Nam Restaurant is one of the places you MUST try.
The Nam Restaurant is regarded as one of Langkawi’s best restaurants. I must admit, after eating here, I was totally satisfied especially with the presentation of the food. The quality was absolutely amazing compared to most places serving similar dishes.
Another other impressive place here is the Chin Chin Bar and Lounge. Located just next to the Nam Restaurant, this stand alone wooden structure has a very impressive atmosphere bringing you into another time.
Decorated with antiques and wooden furniture, the Chin Chin Bar serves guests cocktails, liqueur coffee and wines.
If you do not stay here, you should at least come here for the dining experience. The Nam Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner with desserts being served trough out the day.
I especially like the idea that the place is secluded and peaceful as there are no neighboring resorts in the vicinity.
One of the highlights here is the sunset deck where you can enjoy a fantastic dinner during the sunset. Garden tables are placed on a wooden deck by the marshland and occasionally it is full during dinner so best to make reservations for this. They also have a range of tapas/mezze and cocktails from 5pm onwards here.
One of the things that caught my attention was the lotus pond in front of the resort. It is one of the most beautiful ponds I have seen as it is well taken care of by the resort staff. Not that there are many of these ponds around therefore seeing one in pristine condition was an added bonus.

At the Bon Ton Resort, the beauty about this boutique resort is actually the antique wooden kampung homes which have been completely restored.
They are in fact original Malay homes brought to this location carefully by experts and refurbished according to the traditional specifications. The only make overs are done inside where there is an air condition and ceiling fan.
These antique villas come with standard hotel items such as coffee/tea, fridge, toaster, sarongs, slippers, television, DVD player and wireless Internet. Everything else is kept original and even the showers are back to basics.
At Bon Ton, there are a total of 8 exclusive traditional villas available. All different and have individual names like White Frangipani, Yellow Orchid and Blue Ginger. Each villa is designed to theme the style of the Malay homes and some are even suitable for large holiday families.
There is even a private dining room overlooking the lotus pond suitable for small groups, family gatherings or even a business lunch. This is set inside a antique Malay traditional home.
What can one do at the Bon Ton Resort you may be asking. Well, besides just lazying around, there is a ton of activities that lead you out of the resort where you can talk to the reception to arrange activities.
They include nature hikes, visiting the cable car, going for island hopping, exploring the night markets in town, visiting various nightspots around the island, Kayaking or visiting the Geo Park and best of all, renting a car to self explore the island.
If exploring is not your cup of tea, then just relaxing out at the Bon Ton with a good book and doing absolutely nothing would work.
Some guest make it here to get away from everything modern society in the cities has to offer. They just want to go back to basics and detox. This is one of the places to achieve it .
A small little souvenir and gift shop selling all kinds of local handicraft, clothes, bags, jewelery and even a nice wine collection is available here. If you like books, there is a small selection on sale.
One thing I did not mention earlier is that the owner Narelle stays in one of the houses right behind the resort and the Bon Ton is also home to LASsie (Langkawi Animal Shelter and Sanctuary) so you may hear a lot of dogs barking from around the back area if you venture too close.
At the resort itself, you will see quite a number of local cats roaming freely in the compounds. They are friendly and the resort looks after these cats, some of them extra friendly. So if you are allergic to pets, please contact them to see what can be done.
Overall, I would give the Bon Ton Resort a thumbs up as they are truly one of a kind compared to all the resorts and hotels I have been too. Narelle has done something no one ever thought off and it has since paid off.
Now she has launched a new project called Temple Tree where a full concept of Malaysian heritage buildings have been carefully moved to a plot of land next to the Bon Ton. Here you will be seeing traditional Chinese, Malay, Eurasian and Colonial homes refurbished for your exclusive stay and experience.
Villa rates vary and prices start from RM500.00 (US$160.00) for 2 persons right up till RM1100.00 (US$360.00) for 5 persons. Rates include a continental breakfast which is placed in your fridge the night before.
