Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race 2017

The Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race 2017 will take place from 25 to 26 February at one of Malaysia’s hill resorts in Pahang.

This is one of the pioneer bird watching events in Malaysia which was started in 1988 and is running in its 30th year.

In total, over 10,000 people have visited Fraser’s Hill for the bird race and festival which also attracts participants and visitors from neighbouring countries.

Organized by Tourism Pahang, Malaysia Nature Society (MNS), Malaysian WWW for Nature, and Fraser’s Hill Development Corporation, this yearly event attracts beginner and professional bird watchers and nature lovers to the highland retreat.

The great thing about this event is that it is only about less than two hours’ drive from Kuala Lumpur, using the scenic route to get to Bukit Fraser as it is locally called.

Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race

For the 30th year of the Fraser’s Hill Bird Race, there are some exciting events, activities and contest line up for participants and also visitors.

The general bird race is the main event where teams of three persons will race to spot the most number of birds here.

Other events include the Fraser’s Hill Bird Photography Contest where it is open to everyone. Prizes are yet to be announced, but rest assured, they will be attractive ones.

Bird watchers and photographers have the opportunity to try their luck and spotting or photographing the 260 species of birds found in an area of 2,804 hectares of lush tropical rainforest here. Among them, you can find some endemic birds which are rare or extremely rare.

Based on the previous year’s categories for the bird race, they are usually divided into three segments which are;

Advanced category: For serious and experienced bird watchers
Novice category: For those who just take up bird watching out of curiosity or treat bird watching as an academic hobby
Local category: For the local residents who know the whereabouts of the birds in Fraser’s Hill are

Other Bird Race and Events Around Malaysia

Apart from Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race, there are also many other bird races and events happening around Malaysia.

The Kenyir Bird and Nature Quest usually happens in the month of March and held at Tasik Kenyir Lake, which is in the state of Terengganu.

Wings of KKB also known as the Selangor International Bird Race happens in the month of April or May and is held in the area of Kuala Selangor.

In Putrajaya, there is also the Putrajaya Bird Race which happens at the main Putrajaya Wetlands area.

This is followed by the Borneo Bird Festival which takes place in Sabah, Malaysia Borneo during the months of September or October.
