In a remarkable turn of events, Malaysia has surpassed Thailand as the most-visited country in ASEAN for 2024, welcoming a stunning 38 million foreign tourists. This achievement exceeds the original target of 27.3 million and sets a new benchmark for the country’s tourism industry.

With the 2024 milestone in the books, there’s a push to reassess future tourism goals. Instead of sticking to the original target of 36 million for 2026, there’s a growing desire to set a more realistic target that reflects the current success.

The aim is not just to attract more visitors but to generate greater economic benefits for the country through tourism. To further capitalize on this momentum, Malaysia’s tourism sector has set a goal to generate at least RM150 billion in tourism revenue.

Thailand recorded 35.54 million international arrivals for the same period, making it a close contender. While Bangkok continues to hold its title as the world’s most-visited city and Kuala Lumpur ranks 10th globally, Malaysia’s overall visitor count has outpaced Thailand’s this year, solidifying its place as the regional tourism leader in ASEAN.

Comparative ASEAN international tourist arrivals for 2024 include:

  1. Malaysia – 38 million
  2. Thailand – 35.54 million
  3. Vietnam – 17.5 million
  4. Singapore* – 15.3 million
  5. Indonesia* – 12.66 million
  6. Cambodia – 6.7 million
  7. Philippines – 5.43 million
  8. Laos* – 5 million
  9. Myanmar* – 0.9 million

(data for Singapore, Indonesia, and Laos are only for the first 11 months of 2024. Brunei’s statistics have not been disclosed.)

Notably, Malaysia’s official January-November 2024 data from Tourism Malaysia reported 34.1 million international arrivals, including excursionists — day visitors who do not stay overnight.
