Proboscis Monkey Picture of the Week

Proboscis Monkey Picture of the Week

Proboscis Monkey is my picture of the week showcasing various portrait shots taken with a Nikon 55-300mm lens. These unique monkeys also known as the ‘Dutch Monkey’ or Monyet Belanda in Malay – can only be found in the island of Borneo and no where else in the world.

I was visiting Labuk Bay in Sandakan, Sabah Borneo in October 2010 when I chanced upon a rare opportunity to photograph them up close. The Proboscis Monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) at Labuk Bay are in a controlled environment set up to protect and care for these special primates.

Check Wikipedia for more information on the Proboscis Monkeys from Borneo. Below are a series of pictures taken during my trip there.

If you are headed to Sandakan in Sabah, you may also want to check my other article on 10 Things to do in Sandakan Sabah.

This is my first time attempting to do portrait shots on wildlife and I was fortunate enough to experiment on the Proboscis Monkey on this trip to Labuk Bay in Sandakan, Sabah.

Beautiful shots of these monkeys headed for extinction in the wild.Perhaps most of Borneo's wildlife will only be seen in protected sanctuaries as palm oil gobbles up more and more of their natural habitat.

Eunice & Lindsay, thank you so much. I really enjoyed being up, close and personal with these unique primates.

Jim, you're absolutely right on that matter and I do hope the authorities take extra measures to counter the palm oil issues currently being faced here.

Cheers,
David

I so want to see these in the wild. Great photos. You are so close, were they afraid at all?

Devin, yes they were about 3 feet from me. Apparently, one of them was not afraid when I took his picture. Great experience!

Norbert, if you ever get a chance to visit Sabah Borneo, do make a trip to Labuk Bay or Kinabatangan to see these amazing monkeys. Should be on your 'bucket-list' 🙂

Cheers,
David
