Raja Ampat Airport Review

If you plan a trip to Raja Ampat, you’ll most likely fly into Sorong, West Papua. Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) serves as the main gateway, and since my last visit in late 2017, I’m excited to share my Raja Ampat airport review of this vital hub.

Raja Ampat Airport Review

Sorong is the capital of West Papua, and Domine Eduard Osok Airport is a key transit point for travellers heading to Raja Ampat. Two primary airports servicing the Raja Ampat region are Domine Eduard Osok in Sorong and the smaller Marinda Airport in Waisai. The former connects with major Indonesian cities, while the latter handles flights from smaller locales.

Airport Design and History

Named after Domine Eduard Osok (1920-1988), a revered pastor and missionary in West Papua, the airport reflects his significant contribution to the region. The modern design of the airport building is striking and integrates local cultural elements, such as the Betel nut motif, symbolizing its connection to the area’s heritage.

The airport features a single runway, extending 2,500 meters in length and 45 meters in width. It can accommodate small turboprop aircraft as well as larger jets like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. Anything larger cannot land here.

Facilities and Services

The airport’s facilities are relatively modern, having undergone a major renovation completed in March 2016 at a cost of 236 billion Rupiah (USD 16.5 million). The spacious terminal covers 13,700 square meters and can handle up to 782 passengers at a time. The two floors house various amenities, including:

  • Security and Check-In: Modern luggage x-ray machines, walk-through metal detectors, and a queueing system for check-in counters streamline the process.
  • Waiting Lounges: The waiting areas are comfortable and well-designed, with ample seating and modern amenities.
  • Retail and Dining: The second floor offers a range of retail shops, including souvenir stores, coffee cafes, bakeries, and local eateries. The coffee here, particularly Papuan coffee, is exceptional and worth sampling.
  • Massage and Relaxation: I enjoyed a 30-minute foot massage, a unique and relaxing experience.
  • Souvenirs: A variety of local ethnic jewellery, Papuan fabrics, and paintings are available. Prices are very reasonable compared to tourist hotspots like Bali.
  • Cleanliness and Facilities: The airport is well-maintained, with clean restrooms, cafes and restaurants available.

Lounge Access and Other Considerations

A premium lounge is available for business travellers, though I did not visit it. From what I could see, it appears to be a high-quality facility. There are also Muslim-friendly facilities nearby, like a Surau for prayers and toilets.

When I last visited, there was a cafe for coffee lovers and several shops selling the famous Papua Coffee, which is highly sought after by many coffee aficionados. However, I had already bought coffee from the local villages, so I did not get any.

Airlines and Connections

Seven airlines operate flights into Domine Eduard Osok, with four leading airlines catering to international travellers. It’s essential to check connecting flight times carefully, as many direct flights to Raja Ampat depart in the morning. Some travellers may need to stay overnight in their connecting city.

Thank you for that blog post. We have been at Sorong Airport a couple of years ago and will go again next March. As we have to wait there for 3,5 hours as stopover I was happy to read that it improved so much. Your article makes me looking forward to our long flight from Germany to Kaimana. Very useful information .
