Sarawak Longhouse Pictures in Black & White
This collection of Sarawak Longhouse Pictures in Black & White showcases the unique lifestyle and culture of the Iban people living deep in the interior of Sarawak on the island of Borneo. Over many years of travelling along the remote Lemanak River, I had the opportunity to visit several traditional Iban longhouses and document everyday life through black and white photography. The Iban are the largest indigenous tribe in Sarawak, and many families still live together in large wooden communal homes where anywhere from 10 to 50 families may share a single longhouse. What fascinated me most was the simplicity of life here, far away from the distractions of modern technology and city living.
During my travels around Sarawak, I used a Nikon D60 for most of my photography work, while my old iPhone 3GS was mainly used for taking notes and simple snapshots. Back in 2011, smartphone photography was still very limited, and the image quality was nothing compared to that of DSLR cameras. Many of these journeys were work-related assignments involving documentation for possible television production projects, and I would often travel with another photographer into the rural areas of Sarawak.
The particular longhouse featured in this photo series is located deep along the Lemanak River and, back then, required a journey of almost five to six hours from Kuching. We would first travel overland for several hours before arriving at a small riverside jetty, where we continued the journey upriver by traditional longboat. The boat ride itself was one of the highlights of the experience, offering a glimpse into the everyday river life of the Iban communities living in the interior of Sarawak. Over the years, I was informed that newer access roads had been built, significantly reducing travel time to these remote longhouses.

Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed this collection of Sarawak Longhouse Pictures in Black & White, captured over two years during my many visits to the Lemanak River region for both work and personal exploration. Normally, I would share my travel photography in full colour, but for this series, I wanted to present the images in black and white to better highlight the emotions, textures, and timeless atmosphere of longhouse life in rural Sarawak.
These photographs are part of my personal travel and documentary photography collection from my journeys around Sarawak. If you have any questions, comments, or experiences to share about visiting an Iban longhouse in Sarawak, please feel free to leave them below. Remember, these photos were taken in 2011 with a Nikon D60, and were not professionally arranged. They were random, ad hoc, and work-related.
