Canopy Walk at Danum Valley

Few places on Earth rival the Danum Valley Canopy Walk, a majestic treetop structure perched high above a 348-square-kilometre forest reserve in Sabah. This world-renowned walkway puts you heart-to-heart with Borneo’s wild side, and getting there is a true expedition. Visitors can expect a bumpy, three-hour 4WD journey from Lahad Datu, but the payoff is worth it.

Visiting in 2012, I felt a sense of awe, as if I were stepping into a primary lowland rainforest so pristine and complex that it felt like a sacred sanctuary for the planet’s rarest species. Just take a look at the photos I took, it’s simply out of this world, how they can actually build a canopy walkway with multiple levels!

For the ultimate Danum Valley experience, nothing compares to the Borneo Rainforest Lodge—a stunning, eco-luxury retreat located right in the heart of the rainforest. From here, you can explore the spectacular canopy walkway, which stretches 300 meters long and sits 27 meters high.
It is a dream destination for birdwatchers looking to spot elusive species at eye level. What truly sets it apart, however, is the innovative three-level intersection centred on a massive tree, making it a true architectural and natural marvel.

My trip here in 2012 was purely for the overall experience, and birdwatching at Danum Valley was one of the main highlights, so I visited this beautiful canopy walk. I also want to highlight that you need to stay at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge in order to access this canopy walk.
For birders, nature lovers, or those seeking a truly unique experience in Sabah, Danum Valley is guaranteed to be one of the best places to visit, and if you’re looking for a budget alternative, I’m afraid there is none for this.

More about Canopy Walks

Over the years of travelling, I have compiled a list of the best canopy walks in Malaysia, most of which I have been to. You may have read or seen other articles on this, but let me assure you, they are all written by desktop writers who have never been to any of them.
As a travel writer and photographer, one of my focuses is outdoors and nature; experiencing these canopy walks was part of my duty to share them with my readers. Some of the canopy walks or treetop walks are located in remote areas where guided tours are required. Most of them are in commercial parks and areas.

For the truly passionate nature lover, Danum Valley is the ultimate Bornean destination. The sheer richness of the flora and fauna here is staggering, and few places on Earth can rival the experience of standing atop its unique canopy walk. Having walked these paths myself, I can personally vouch that once you’ve witnessed the magic of Canopy Walk at Danum Valley, nothing else quite compares.
