A new attraction is being added to the list of theme parks and family travel in Malaysia, where the all-new Movie Animation Park Studios in Ipoh, Perak, will be Asia’s first animation theme park.

The place known as MAPS is expected to be ready by ~~March 2016~~ and ~~July 2016~~, postponed to ~~December 2016~~ and June 26 2017. Update: This place closed down due to poor management in Jan 2020.

According to a forum, in December 2015, the construction was about 80% done, but again, fine-tuning, testing and many other factors may delay the launch slightly to another date in 2016.

Most theme parks will be indoor, air-conditioned or undercover, shielding guests from Malaysia’s hot, wet, humid weather.

The theme park will also have Malaysia’s tallest drop tower, a thrilling live car stunt show and many more designed for families and people of all ages.

There will also be a variety of themed food & beverage and retail outlets throughout a 52-acre site.

8th May 2017 Update: The Malay Mail Newspaper announced that MAPS Perak will officially open on June 26 2017.

What most people would want to know is what rides and attractions are available, so here they are;

The Movie Animation Park Studios theme park will feature over 40 Rides, including Malaysia’s first DreamWorks Animation dedicated zone with popular animated characters like Mr. Peabody and Sherman, The Croods, Megamind, and Casper the Friendly Ghost.

Joining animation characters from DreamWorks is also the local favourite animation character, BoBoiBoy, created by MONSTA.

The theme park also cost around RM450 million to build. It is located at Meru Raya, Perak and is expected to attract 1.4 million visitors in its first year of operations, of which locals would make up 80% and foreigners 20%.

One of the highlights is the appearance of the Smurfs, who have been around for the last 57 years and will be featured at Movie Animation Park Studios in shows, costumes, characters and merchandising.

How to go to Movie Animation Park Studios Ipoh

For those driving, it is just after the main Ipoh Toll. You must exit the toll, get on the Meru Highway or Lebuhraya Meru, and then find Persiaran Meru Raya 1.

From Kuala Lumpur (South)
► Get on the PLUS Highway and head North to Ipoh/Penang
► Exit at the Ipoh Utara Toll (Ipoh North Toll)
► Follow the Lebuhraya Meru and keep left
► Turn left at Persiaran Meru Raya 1 and keep going
► Movie Animation Park Studios is on your left

From Penang (North)
► Get on the PLUS Highway and head South to Ipoh/Kuala Lumpur

► Follow the exit to Jalan Chemor (A1) and turn right

This massive project will add to the list of Theme Parks in Malaysia by offering something new and different from the general theme parks.

While this park will open before the much talked about 20th Century Fox Theme Park in Genting Highlands, the two are different and offer Malaysians and foreigners an excellent choice for family fun.

MAPS Perak Update August 2016: According to the theme park website, the opening has been postponed to ~~December 2016~~ and June 26 2017.

In Ipoh, there is only the Tambun Lost World Water Park, and the Movie Animation Park Studios will be the second world-class theme park in Perak, Malaysia.
