Food is one of the main concerns for Muslim travellers visiting Japan, and this article will talk about a Halal restaurant in Tokyo featuring Samrat Curry Plaza in Shibuya. Most Muslim travellers prefer to find a proper Halal restaurant; sometimes, it isn’t easy to find one. If you do not already know, there are over 50 Halal restaurants all over Tokyo. All you need to do is find out where they are.

Halal Restaurant in Tokyo

During a visit to Tokyo in February 2017, I was introduced to several Halal restaurants, mainly in the commercial tourist areas. Having been to Tokyo multiple times in the last 20 years, I have pretty much seen how the food landscape has changed to suit tourism.

More importantly, the rise of Muslim travellers to Japan has also brought several Halal restaurants and even food supply shops. A recent statistic shows that currently, over 100,000 Muslims are living and working or studying in Japan.

So, this article generally talks about the main area of Shibuya, which many Malaysians or Muslim travellers would visit on their trip to Tokyo. Shibuya is one of the most popular districts, and it offers an amazing choice for shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Samrat Curry Plaza, Halal Restaurant in Tokyo

Samrat Curry Plaza is located on the ground floor at street level; therefore, it is not hard to miss. Japanese call this place Samuratokarehausupuraza, which means Sam Rat Curry House Plaza, but it is said in Japanese. Funny right?

The Halal restaurant gets crowded during peak dining hours, especially with locals. But Muslim tourists are also often seen dining here. They offer up to 30 pax seating and also cater to takeaways.

What is great about Samrat Curry Plaza is its huge Halal logo on the main entrance door and, strangely, beside a Corona Beer sign. This means the outlet serves alcohol by the bottle only but is a Halal-certified outlet. Confusing right?

The Halal certification is issued by the Nippon Asia Halal Association of Japan, and they probably see things differently compared to Muslim countries. Again, Dubai is a Muslim nation, but beer is also sold there, just like in Malaysia, Singapore or Indonesia.

So, to clear the confusion, Japanese customers ordered beer by bottle, as it was part of their dining customs. So, no glasses are used for this. However, you can always check with the restaurant before ordering or buying a drink from the vending machine just outside the restaurant.

Samrat Restaurant Shibuya Menu

The great thing about the menu is that it is plastered all over the main entrance in pictures and English. This means you can see what is sold before ordering your food. Many travellers who do not understand text-only menus face this issue.

Because Samrat serves Indian-style cuisine, you can expect good old Naan and Curry with various meats. They also offer chicken, mutton, seafood, and dhal choices, so vegetarians can also visit this halal restaurant in Shibuya.

Apart from ala carte, they offer set meals, which are quite a bargain. Prices start at  ¥950 per set, and you can eat as much Naan and Rice as you like. For children, there are kids’ sets priced at ¥750, which includes a soft drink.

A Biryani set will cost ¥1200 with a salad and drink, and you can eat as much naan and rice as you want. You have the choice of what type of curry you want to have. Samrat offers a decent selection of tandoori, kebab, samosa, spring rolls and salads for side dishes. Prices are from ¥300 to ¥800 per side dish.
Naan bread is also offered in choices of plain, butter, garlic and cheese with prices of ¥350 to ¥500 per naan. For the big eater, try the 2-curry or 3-curry set at ¥1000 and ¥1100 respectively, or the Deluxe Thali set at ¥1280.

Samrat is highly recommended if you are in the area and need to find a Halal restaurant in Shibuya. Again, if you don’t mind modern Halal-style Japanese restaurants, this place provides a great meal.

The shop is located along the main road of Inokashira Dori and faces a junction. The famous Shibuya 109 Building is only a five-minute walk away, so use Google Maps or Waze to find Samrat Restaurant Shibuya.

I also visited another Halal Ramen restaurant in Tokyo called Naritaya. It is located in the Asakusa area and near the famous Senso-Ji Temple in Asakusa. Honestly, it is not bad at all. I had my speculations on this, but it was quite nice after trying it. So, if you are looking for a Halal Ramen, this is one of the recommended places.

Conclusion

For those visiting Tokyo on their own, you will be travelling around the metropolis to get to popular places. The best way to explore Tokyo is by using the Tokyo Metro and its day passes, as this saves you a lot of money if you move from district to district.

If you have discovered other Halal restaurants in Tokyo, please share them with me. I would like to know about your experience. Have a fantastic trip to Tokyo, and travel safely.
