Royal Belum International Hornbill Expedition 2017
The Royal Belum International Hornbill Expedition 2017 will take place from the 25th to 28th August 2017 and this bird watching the event will be mainly to survey the Malaysian Hornbill population.
Held at the Royal Belum State Park, this place is known to be the home of all 10 Malaysian hornbill species in an IBA or Important Birding Area of MY07.
The event is also organised by EcoMy, one of the leading ecotourism non-governmental organisations of Malaysia.

Royal Belum State Park is also known as one of the premier ecotourism destinations of Peninsular Malaysia, where the rainforest here are known to be over 130 million years old and the second oldest in the world.

Because of the concentration of all 10 hornbill species found here, this place is also called the Hornbill Capital of Malaysia. And for this year’s hornbill count, international teams have been invited to participate for the event.
The Royal Belum International Hornbill Expedition 2017 is also in partnership with Tourism Malaysia, Perak State Park Corporation (PSPC) and the Northern Corridor Implementation Agency (NCIA).

In previous counts, there have been up to 3000+ birds done in one count. This of course includes other bird species at the state park. For hornbills here, it is stated that there are 9 resident species which live around here.
One of the highlights includes spotting the migrating Plain-pouched Hornbill (Rhyticeros subruficollis) from Southern Myanmar and Thailand. These beautiful hornbills are also threatened by habitat loss in recent years.
Data collected from the count will be used as part of an action plan to promote ecotourism and bird watching as a sustainable tourism activity for Royal Belum State Park.
