Arborek Island stands out as a gem in Raja Ampat for its natural beauty and commitment to conservation. During my visit here some years ago, I could not believe how the people here lived in so much harmony without the distractions of modernisation.

For about a hundred years, the island has been home to around 60 families from the Batew Tribe in West Papua and is also home to one of the popular dive sites in Raja Ampat. Anyone visiting Raja Ampat must visit Arborek Island and dive below the main jetty to see the world’s largest clams.

How to go to Arborek Island?

Arborek Island is typically reached by boat from other areas in Raja Ampat. Liveaboard dive operators (LOB) and private charters often include it in their itineraries, providing a convenient way to visit this stunning island.

When you book a tour to Raja Ampat for scuba diving or birdwatching, check with the operator if your tour includes visiting Arborek Island. You can also request to add this to your itinerary, as it would be something not to miss.

Arborek Island’s combination of stunning marine environments, cultural richness, and successful conservation efforts makes it an essential destination for anyone visiting Raja Ampat. However, you must make prior arrangements if you want a completely welcoming experience.

The island is open to everyone, but the local community must make arrangements for special visits, such as if you have a large group visiting for conservation purposes or want to see how they manage their sustainable living on Arborek Island.
