Perlis Canopy Walk Reopened by FRIM with Night Walks
Nature lovers and thrill-seekers have a new reason to visit Malaysia’s northernmost state as the Perlis Canopy Walk was reopened by FRIM in early 2026 at the Teak Eco Park, located within the Mata Ayer Research Station (SPF).
The reopening isn’t just a return to form; it marks the launch of a brand-new experience: guided twilight and night walks, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the forest’s nocturnal life.

A New Chapter for Eco-Tourism
The ceremony was officiated by the Menteri Besar of Perlis, Tuan Abu Bakar Hamzah, during the “Suasenja” (Twilight) program. He highlighted that the revitalisation of the park aligns perfectly with the Visit Malaysia 2026 aspirations, positioning Perlis as a competitive destination for sustainable tourism.
“The reopening of this canopy walkway acts as a catalyst for sustainable tourism development, providing direct benefits to our local communities,” said Abu Bakar.
Upgraded Facilities for a Better Experience
The restoration was made possible through an RM800,000 allocation from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC). According to FRIM Director-General Dato’ Dr. Ismail Parlan, the funds were used for:
-
Extensive safety and structural upgrades to the canopy walkway.
-
The construction of a new, comfortable ticketing counter.
-
General facility conservation and modification to enhance visitor comfort.

Science Meets Adventure
The Teak Eco Park is steeped in history, located within the Mata Ayer Forest Reserve, which has housed teak plantations since 1953. By rebranding as an “Eco Park,” FRIM aims to transform the site from a strictly scientific research station into a knowledge-based tourism destination.
Visitors won’t just be walking through trees; they will be guided by experts. FRIM is integrating scientific expertise with nature interpretation, allowing local tour operators to create creative packages—such as the new night treks—that educate as much as they entertain.
