KLPF 2026: Malaysia’s Premier Photography Festival Celebrates a Landmark 30th Anniversary

There are moments in a country’s cultural calendar that deserve more than a passing mention — and the Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival’s 30th Anniversary is undoubtedly one of them. This year, Malaysia’s largest and most celebrated photography festival turns 30, and the organisers are pulling out all the stops to mark the occasion with something truly special.

Set to take place from 21 to 23 August 2026 at KL Gateway Mall, Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur, KLPF 2026 arrives at the intersection of two significant milestones: three decades of championing photography in Southeast Asia, and the nationwide celebration of Visit Malaysia 2026. The convergence of both creates a festival unlike any before it — deeper in meaning, richer in programming, and wider in its invitation to the world.

First held in 1997 and organised by PCP Publications, KLPF has grown from a modest photography gathering into the region’s most significant imaging event. It is, as its own tagline puts it, the festival that puts Malaysian photography on the world map. Over the years, tens of thousands of photographers — amateurs and professionals alike — have walked through its doors to exhibit, learn, compete, and connect. For its 30th edition, KLPF is not just celebrating what photography has been; it is asking what it can still become.

1. Special Exhibition — Apa Khabar Malaysia: Our Nation in 30 Perspectives

At the heart of KLPF 2026 is its flagship special exhibition, and it carries a title that resonates far beyond a casual greeting.

“Apa Khabar Malaysia” — Our Nation in 30 Perspectives (Negara Kita dalam 30 Perspektif) is an open-call curated exhibition conceived specifically to mark both the festival’s 30th anniversary and Visit Malaysia 2026. In Malay, apa khabar literally means “how are you?” — but in this context, it becomes something far more reflective: How is our nation today? How do we see it, feel it, and understand it?

The exhibition invites 30 selected photographers to each submit a cohesive series of 10 images, collectively constructing a mosaic portrait of Malaysia through 300 frames. Every series flows as one connected visual story, and photographers are free to explore any genre — landscapes, cityscapes, street photography, portraiture, documentary, wildlife, architecture, cultural traditions, or conceptual work. The only requirement is that the images breathe together as a unified narrative of the country we call home.

This is an unusually generous format. Rather than single winning shots, Apa Khabar Malaysia celebrates the photo essay and the storytelling photographer — those who can hold a thematic thread across an entire body of work, and let it speak with one clear, heartfelt voice.

How to Submit — Apa Khabar Malaysia

You can be a seasoned exhibitor or a first-time entrant; this is a rare opportunity to have your personal interpretation of Malaysia displayed at the country’s most prestigious photography event. The 10 July 2026 deadline is firm, so photographers are encouraged to begin curating their series now.

2. Annual Theme Exhibition — SMILE: A Many-Splendoured Thing

KLPF 2026’s Annual Theme Photo Exhibition carries a theme that is at once simple and deeply universal: SMILE — A Many-Splendoured Thing. A smile needs no translation. It crosses cultures and borders effortlessly, and through the lens of a camera, it becomes a window into the full spectrum of human experience — expressing warmth, connection, joy, and our shared humanity in a single unguarded moment.

Photographers are invited to submit images that capture the smiles they encounter in the world around them — on city streets, in bustling markets, at festivals, in quiet everyday moments, or anywhere life happens. Each image is an opportunity to tell a powerful story with the most universal of gestures.

In conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026, we especially encourage Malaysian photographers to participate, showcasing how the Malaysian smile reflects the country’s renowned hospitality, cultural harmony, and welcoming spirit for visitors from across the globe.

Submission details:

Note that the SMILE exhibition submission deadline of 30 June 2026 falls slightly earlier than the Apa Khabar Malaysia deadline of 10 July, so photographers keen on both should prioritise their SMILE submission first.

What to Expect at KLPF 2026 — The Main Event

Beyond the special anniversary exhibition, KLPF’s three-day main event at KL Gateway Mall is packed with programming for photographers of every level, from curious beginners to seasoned professionals.

Annual Theme Exhibition

Each year, KLPF runs an open-call Annual Theme Photo Exhibition that invites photographers to interpret a set theme across any genre. Past themes have included “Frames of Time: Capturing the Essence of Moments” (2025), “Reinventing Photography” (2024), and “We Are Family” (2023). The 2026 edition theme is expected to be announced on official KLPF channels — watch @malaysia_klpf on Instagram and the KLPF Facebook page for updates.

Photo Creator of the Year

One of KLPF’s most anticipated on-stage events, the Photo Creator of the Year competition invites photographers to submit themed bodies of work and present them live before an audience and panel. Finalists take the stage to walk the crowd through their creative process, making this as much a celebration of the photographer’s voice as of the photographs themselves. It is a defining highlight of every KLPF, and the 30th edition promises to raise the bar further.

Photographer Profile Exhibition

KLPF’s open exhibition segment invites both professional and amateur photographers to display their portfolio work to a public audience of enthusiasts, curators, and potential clients across the three festival days. It is one of the most accessible entry points for newer photographers who wish to exhibit in a professional setting without the pressure of a formal competition. Photomania & Travelmania

Two of KLPF’s most beloved recurring segments return for 2026. Photomania is a live, fast-paced photography challenge that tests creativity, speed, and technical skill on the spot — always one of the most energetic and crowd-pleasing segments of the festival. Travelmania fuses photography with travel storytelling, celebrating the deeply intertwined relationship between the two pursuits that has always been central to KLPF’s identity. Tourism boards — including recurring participants Taiwan Tourism, Thailand Tourism, and Selangor Tourism — typically maintain a strong presence, making these segments as much about destination inspiration as photography craft.

International Photography Showcases

True to its regional ambitions, KLPF traditionally features exhibitions from partner international photography festivals, placing Malaysian photographers in direct conversation with their peers from across Southeast Asia and beyond. Past editions have hosted showcases from the Angkor Photo Festival (Cambodia) and the Chiang Mai Documentary Arts Festival (Thailand).

Talks, Workshops & Seminars

One of the core pillars of KLPF’s appeal is education. Over the three days, more than 100 talks and workshops are typically delivered by local and international photography professionals, covering everything from landscape and wildlife photography to smartphone photography, portrait techniques, post-processing, and the latest camera technology. Whether you are there to sharpen a specific skill or simply absorb as much knowledge as possible, there is always something on stage worth staying for.

Photography Bazaar & Gear Exhibition

Surrounding the exhibitions and stage programming is a lively bazaar with booths from camera brands, gear retailers, software companies, printing services, and travel-related vendors. For photography enthusiasts looking to upgrade their equipment, discover new tools, or simply browse the latest in the imaging world, this section adds a satisfying commercial dimension to the festival’s creative heart.

Getting There — KL Gateway Mall

KLPF 2026 returns to its now-familiar home at KL Gateway Mall, which is well-served by public transport and easy to find:

  • By LRT: Take the Kelana Jaya Line and alight at LRT University Station (KJ19). Walk across to KL Gateway Mall, through the H&M entrance, and head to the main open concourse area. The festival also spills onto the second level via the long escalator.
  • By car or ride-hailing: Navigate to KL Gateway Mall, No. 2, Jalan Kerinchi, Gerbang Kerinchi Lestari, 59200 Kuala Lumpur.

Taking the train is strongly recommended during peak festival hours to avoid traffic and the hassle of parking.

KLPF Through the Years — A Brief History

For those new to the festival, KLPF’s journey to its 30th edition is a story of resilience, reinvention, and steadfast love for the craft. First organised in 1997, the festival has navigated major disruptions along the way — most notably the COVID-19 pandemic, during which it pivoted to a hybrid format that combined limited in-person activities with live-streamed talks and virtual exhibitions via Facebook and Zoom, keeping the photography community connected through some of the most challenging years in recent memory.

In 2022, KLPF held its final edition at Viva Home Shopping Mall along Jalan Loke Yew before relocating to KL Gateway Mall in 2023. Each year’s theme has served as a creative anchor for the community: “We Are Family” (2023) celebrated diversity; “Reinventing Photography” (2024) pushed photographers to explore new creative territory; and “Frames of Time” (2025) paid tribute to the timeless magic of a perfectly frozen moment.

Thirty Years On — Still Asking the Right Questions

There is something fitting about how KLPF 2026 chooses to frame its anniversary. Rather than simply looking back, it turns its lens outward and asks Malaysia a question: Apa khabar?

How are we doing? What do our cities look like today, our kampungs, our coasts, our markets, our faces? What stories have gone untold, and which fleeting moments deserved to be held forever in a frame?

Photography at its best is not decoration. It is documentation, empathy, curiosity, and conversation. For 30 years, KLPF has held space for all of those things — and in 2026, it invites more photographers than ever to step up, contribute their 10 frames, and help write the next chapter of Malaysia’s visual story.

Doesn’t matter if you are an established photographer with a full portfolio, a hobbyist with a keen eye, or simply a photography lover who wants to experience the best the field has to offer, KLPF 2026 is an event worth marking in your calendar, and, if you have a camera in your hands, in your submission queue too.
