Songkran Festival Pictures in Hat Yai

Here is a collection of Songkran Pictures celebrated in Hat Yai, Southern Thailand. The massive water festival is celebrated in April and on the eve of Songkran.

During this time, a special Midnight Songkran is also held here, with other fringe events taking place. The roads in the city will be crowded with many locals and foreigners who come out to celebrate the Thai New Year.

Passengers on tuk-tuks were not spared too.
The Songkran pictures here were part of the Songkran 2012 festival and are all about people having good fun. Thai people and foreigners celebrate this festival with passion and friendliness throughout the country.

Pickup trucks, tuk-tuks, and motorbikes are usually seen in full force, having a wonderful time. As this was my first ever water festival, I took the opportunity to roam the streets of Hat Yai, armed with my plastic bag-covered camera, t-shirt, shorts, and slippers.

Why a plastic bag? Because you will, I repeat, you will get splashed with water. But it is all good fun, so you cannot get angry.

Below are various Songkran photos taken in Hatyai during the Songkran 2012 festival.

Where is Songkran Held in Thailand?

If you have never been to this unique Songkran water festival in Thailand, I recommend you attend this one day.

Songkran is celebrated throughout the 77 provinces of Thailand and is well-known in larger cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Phuket, and Hat Yai.

The one thing about the Thai water festival is that during the three days, everyone gets soaked in good fun, so if you dislike water, especially cold water, this is not for you.

As for me, I really enjoyed walking the streets of Hat Yai and seeing how the locals celebrate the water festival. It runs from morning to night and is usually very intense in the city.

Even on the outskirts, the festival is active, with locals driving around in pickup trucks loaded with huge water containers, splashing anyone in sight.

Remember to protect your phone and wallet/purse with plastic during the Songkran Festival.

Conclusion

I also have another article on the Hat Yai Midnight Songkran, from 8.00 PM till midnight. This is another experience for the water festival.

Songkran takes place every April, and I plan to attend a future event to capture many more interesting pictures to be featured again.

And for anyone planning to visit Thailand, I hope you have a fantastic time there. Also, I hope you enjoyed seeing my Songkran festival pictures in Hat Yai, Thailand.

Lots of wet fun, it seems. I would prefer this festival – hands down – over La Tomatina which is the tomato throwing festival in Spain.

There's a lot of beautiful places in Malaysia and I'm wondering how they celebrate some special occasion. I know it is big day for them. Not only places are great but also the foods.

Man, that looks like a lot of fun. Songkran is a good reminder that we all need to be kids again!
