Top Instagram Spots in Sarawak: The Ultimate Guide for Content Creators and Travellers

Looking for the most grid-worthy, photogenic corners of Borneo? Whether you’re a professional digital creator scouting locations for your next viral Reel or a traveller wanting to capture the aesthetic magic of Malaysia’s largest state, finding the Top Instagram Spots in Sarawak is the ultimate way to plan your journey.

Social media has completely transformed how we plan our travels. Today, wandering the globe to capture that perfect, iconic shot is a massive part of digital tourism. Having explored the length and breadth of Sarawak over the years, I’ve put together this updated, comprehensive guide to help you find the absolute best Top Instagram Spots in Sarawak.

Navigating the Largest State in Malaysia

Because Sarawak is massive, checking off every single destination on this list of Top Instagram Spots in Sarawak means journeying all the way from the south to the north. If you want to see them all, you will need a solid 5 to 6-day itinerary. However, if you are only visiting one specific region or city, you can easily use this guide to find the most aesthetic backdrops near you.

To make your journey seamless, I’ve included Google Maps location links for each spot. While a few of the more remote, off-the-grid gems don’t have exact digital pins, you can easily find your way by asking the friendly locals once you arrive.

Here is your ultimate map to the Best Instagram Spots in Sarawak.

As the capital city, Kuching is the perfect place to start your visual journey. Nicknamed “Cat City” (as Kuching translates to cat in Malay), it offers a fantastic mix of quirky street culture, sleek modern architecture, and historic heritage. Most of these urban spots can be covered on foot in a single morning-to-afternoon photo walk.

1. The Iconic Kuching Cat Statues

You can’t visit the Cat City without a playful lifestyle shot alongside its namesakes.

  • The Main Cat Statue: Located at the intersection of Jalan Tunku Abraham (near the major hotels). This is the city’s most famous and frequently photographed landmark. Main Cat Statue Google Map

  • The Giant Padungan Cat: A standalone, monumental white cat guarding the entrance to Jalan Padungan. Creator Tip: Arrive early in the morning to get a clean shot without traffic or pedestrians in your frame. Jalan Padungan Cat Statue Google Map

It’s always great to be back in Kuching, #Sarawak. I don’t know why, but everytime I visit here, the realism of the people, culture, food and everything just makes me feel happy and at ease. Photo was taken this evening along the busy Kuching Waterfront, showing the beautiful Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building against the Sarawak River. One thing about Kuching, and overall Sarawak that appeals to me is that they do not have to try too hard to promote this place as a tourism destination. Sarawak is doing just awesome, and not dependant on mass tourism unlike many other states or countries. They are perfect the way they are now, and is growing slowly, the way it should. Perhaps some others should follow suit on this natural & organic formula, that keeps the real tourist coming, for the real tourism products. Anyway, I’m also here to attend the 21st Rainforest World Music Festival 2018, which takes place this weekend, and at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Santubong. If you’re here, I will hopefully see you at #RWMF. . . . #borneo #travel #malaysia #rwmf2018 #kuching #rff2018 @rwmf.official . . .

Moving just an hour or two outside the city centre brings you into Sarawak’s dramatic coastal wilderness, perfect for creators channelling an adventurous, outdoor aesthetic.

8. Sarawak Cultural Village (Santubong)

Often described as a “living museum,” this sprawling site showcases traditional longhouses from Sarawak’s diverse indigenous tribes. It easily ranks as one of the Top Instagrams Spots in Sarawak for capturing rich cultural heritage.

9. Bako National Park: The Sea Stacks & Coastal Vistas

Bako is famous for its wild landscapes, rich biodiversity, and jagged coastline.

  • The Cobra Sea Stack: This famous rock formation looks like a cobra poised to strike out of the ocean. Creator Tip: Because it’s located out in the water, you’ll need to shoot this directly from your park boat. Set your camera to a fast shutter speed or burst mode to capture a crisp, sharp shot while moving on the water. (This uniqueand beautiful seastack collapsed in Feb 2024 and is no longer there.)

  • Other Seastacks and Rock Rormations: There are numerous other interesting formations around Bako that resemble various animals and people. While heading to the park, boatmen will usually show you various faces and animals fromed by nature. Great for photos, but from a boat, it can be tricky.
  • The Bay Viewpoint: Hike up one of the park’s short jungle trails to reach the high vantage points overlooking the curved, secluded beaches meeting the ancient rainforest. Bako National Park Google Map

⛰️ Miri & Mulu National Park (The Dramatic North)

Heading into northern Sarawak reveals massive natural wonders, deep limestone caves, and endless horizons that require a bit of travel but offer incredibly high-reward visual content.

10. Tusan Beach (Miri)

While the famous “Horse Cliff Rock” naturally collapsed in early 2020, Tusan Beach remains a beautiful coastal escape for sunset and landscape lovers. The sweeping, rugged cliffs, wide sandy shores, and vast ocean horizons still provide a dreamy setting for cinematic twilight photography and golden hour portraits. Tusan Beach Google Map

11. Niah Caves

Located about two hours from Miri City, Niah is a massive archaeological wonder. The Trader’s Cave, with its towering limestone openings and remnants of old wooden structures, looks like something straight out of an adventure movie. 12. Gunung Mulu National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Mulu represents the absolute pinnacle of Borneo adventure travel content and easily holds some of the most dramatic Top Instagram Spots in Sarawak.

  • The Mulu Pinnacles: A high-effort, multi-day trek that rewards you with an otherworldly view of razor-sharp limestone spires piercing through the jungle canopy. It is best tackled during the dry season for clear views.

  • Deer Cave: One of the largest cave passages on earth. The ultimate shot here is standing deep within the cavern, looking out at the massive opening, with your silhouette perfectly framed against the vibrant green jungle outside. Gunung Mulu National Park Google Map

🌾 The Bario Highlands (The Slow-Travel Aesthetic)

For creators who love a rustic, peaceful, and off-the-beaten-path aesthetic, the Bario Highlands sit roughly 1,000 meters above sea level in northeast Sarawak. Completely removed from bustling urban life, it offers a beautifully preserved community-driven travel experience. For more detailed information, read my 2026 Travel Guide to Bario, as it has a lot of additional info for those planning to stay here.

13. Bario’s Vast Flat Rice Fields

Unlike the stepped mountain terraces seen in other parts of Asia, Bario is famous for its stunning, wide, flat emerald rice fields beautifully framed by misty, rolling mountain ranges.

  • Timing Tip: If you travel between December and February, the fields transform from a lush green into a sea of endless gold right before the harvest, creating an incredible setting for breezy, pastoral storytelling shots. Bario Google Map

14. Prayer Hill (Bukit Doa)

A scenic 30-minute trek up Prayer Hill brings you to a beautifully rustic wooden church tucked away into the highlands. If you continue up the trail to the very peak, you’ll find a massive, iconic cross overlooking a spectacular panoramic view of the entire Bario village valley.

15. The Reflections of Pa’Lungan Village

If you want exclusive content that very few travel feeds have, take the deep trek to the remote village of Pa’Lungan. On a calm, clear day, the village fishing ponds act as giant natural mirrors, perfectly reflecting the sky and clouds for flawless symmetry shots.
