Tasik Biru Bau, Sarawak: A Scenic Blue Lake with a Gold Mining Past

Tasik Biru, or Blue Lake, is one of Bau’s most recognisable attractions, located around 45 minutes by road from Kuching. Set against forested limestone hills and the rugged landscape of the Bau area, the lake is an easy stop for travellers exploring western Sarawak beyond the city.

The lake is best known for its changing shades of blue and turquoise, which stand out beautifully on a clear day. From the lakeside, visitors can see the surrounding green hills, a fountain in the middle of the water and the floating bridge that has become one of the main photo spots here.

Tasik Biru was once part of Bau’s historic gold mining landscape. The town itself has a long association with gold mining, and the lake is a reminder of that earlier era. Today, the former mining area has been developed into a relaxed recreational attraction where locals and visitors come for the scenery, short walks, boating activities and lakeside food.

For photographers, Tasik Biru is especially appealing in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer, and the surrounding hills are reflected across the water. The lake can look more turquoise under bright midday sunshine, while cloudy weather brings out deeper blue and green tones.

Visitors can walk around sections of the lake, cross the floating bridge when it is open, take a short boat ride or try activities such as pedal boats and kayaking, depending on availability. There are also places to sit, enjoy the view and have a drink or meal nearby.

Tasik Biru is a good stop on a day trip to Bau from Kuching. It can be combined with nearby attractions such as Fairy Cave, Wind Cave and the small town of Bau itself. It is not a destination that needs a full day, but it is a pleasant stop for anyone who enjoys nature, photography and Sarawak’s lesser-known landscapes.

Tasik Biru Resort City

As of 2026, Tasik Biru Resort City is already open to visitors, with lakeside accommodation, recreational facilities, cafés and the floating bridge forming part of the current experience. However, the wider resort-city development is still being rolled out in phases, with future plans including additional commercial areas, tourism attractions and Sarawak’s first private zoo.

Conclusion

Please note that opening hours, ticket prices, floating bridge access, boat rides and recreational activities at Tasik Biru may change from time to time. It is recommended to check locally before visiting, especially on weekdays, public holidays or during wet weather. On my last visit in 2024, everything was still in operation.

Finally, Tasik Biru or Blue Lake, is one of those places that feels very different from the usual Sarawak rainforest or river scenery. With its blue water, limestone hills and old gold mining history, it is a simple but worthwhile detour for local or foreign travellers looking to see another side of Kuching and western Sarawak.
